The Holy Grail – Week 8 WRs

Teams on bye week: Falcons, Bears, Packers, Raiders, Jets, Buccaneers

Steve Smith, American football wide receiver f...

Gotta be happy for the guy!

MUST START

1 Calvin Johnson vs Den – Champ wouldn’t be able to cover him in his prime let alone past it.

2 Nicks vs Mia – I take chances in my WR ranks  and he gets the nod because he is due for a huge game soon. Miami is the right matchup for it to happen.

3 Wallace vs NE – You have to think with the extra week to prep for the Steelers that Belichek will make it his goal to take Wallace out of the game. Regardless , he doesn’t have the personnel to execute his defensive gameplans.

4 Welker vs Pit – He is on fire this year , breaking yardage records and dominating the PPR landscape. Pit may contain him a bit , but you never sit him regardless.

5 Steve Smith vs Wash – Newton has really brought life back into a career that was floundering. You can’t help but feel happy for him.

6 Colston vs Stl – He is dominating everyone right now , and the Rams will be no different.

7 Vjax vs KC – Say what you want , but I am gonna keep rolling him out there; especially against a team as beatable for big plays as Kansas City.

8 Bowe vs SD – Same game as the above , worse QB but he still plays as a high end WR1 in almost any matchup.

9 Dez Bryant vs Phi – He has already surpassed Miles Austin as Romo’s most trusted wideout. He looks for him between the 20’s and in the Redzone. At his age and with his skill set he could dominate the position in the years to come.

10 Steve Johnson vs Wash – Had a week off and should come back ready to shine. He is so hard to cover and is all over the field. Fitz loves him and so do I.

Twitter Thursdays – Week 8

Image representing Twitter as depicted in Crun...

Twitter Thursdays!

That’s right folks , it’s midseason mailbag time!

With the huge influx of twitter activity over the last few weeks, I figured it was the perfect time for @iconfantasyJoe to start a  mail bag full of tweets and answer  5 tough  #fantasyfootball questions every Thursday!

Here it is: Enjoy and don’t forget to share with friends!

@Feendog2000 writes:  Hey @iconfantasyJoe w/ A-Rodg on bye. Should I pick up: Beck, Dalton, Bradford, or Ponder?

The one that sticks out like a sore thumb in that pile is Bradford. One he is injured and two he is terrible; Lloyd will help , but the offense looks inept – so he is out. Beck looked good at times vs Carolina last week , but he loses Santana Moss and Tim Hightower as a dump off threat in the same week – so he is out. Ponder looked good early last week , but after re looking at the stats he was 13-32 with 2 interceptions. Harvin has been non-existent this season and Michael Jenkins is their top receiving threat and because of that he is out. Leaving you with the one and only choice for your Bye week replacement as Dalton. AJ Green is already an elite WR , Gresham is turning into a very solid possession and redzone TE. Scott and Leonard replace a suspended Benson and offer more receiving capability and Simpson got busted for 4 billion pounds of weed.

VERDICT: Start Dalton this week and hope the defense catches a contact high from Simpson.

2 @SportsnutStu writes: My man @iconfantasyJoe – Yes or no. Colston for Decker, VJackson, and TOwens?

Ahh , the old one great guy for a decent guy and some junk trade. Normally I would say , decline this trade and send a nicely worded email to the gent who offered this deal to you. But, this is not your normal 3 for 1 deal because Vincent Jackson is a buy low candidate right now. So let’s break this down:

Terrell Owens holds no value in this deal , he should not be rostered , waivered  or traded for;  so I will not discuss him at all because he is an afterthought. Decker is falling off many fantasy rosters with Tebow’s inaccuracy ruining what could have been a break out season for the youngster. Vjax is struggling , but that’s because Gates has been out , Rivers has been below average and his hammy is slowing him down; he will get better. Colston has been dynamic so far when healthy. However , he has his own questions and will not be able to keep this pace up.

VERDICT: Keep Colston because he is better than Vjax by a large margin right now and Decker is only a replaceable bye week fill-in who comes with too many questions to make it worth giving up the best WR in the deal. TO is a non-factor in this deal and should be given no air-time.

3 @markl30680 writes: Yo @iconfantasyJoe – in my  TD only league I Need a WR – Pick 1 L Fitzgerald, B Lloyd or R Wayne. Who to Start?

This one is simple: Lloyd has 0 Tds this year and comes over to the Rams who barely score the ball when Bradford is 100% healthy. Wayne has shown zero chemistry with Painter and has not scored a TD since week 1 against Houston when Collins was at the helm.  Fitzgerald has a tough matchup against Baltimore, but he is their only TD threat with Wells most likely missing the game. If you are going to score on the Ravens it will be through the air and Kolb looked better last week vs the Steelers. Fitz has 2 Tds this year so far which is more than both of the other two options combined and is your safest bet regardless of opponent to score each week for you.

VERDICT: Start Fitzgerald this week , weather the tough matchups and stick with your tier 1 studs.

4 @ldg028 writes – Yo dude bro @iconfantasyJoe – Rank the following WRs for the rest of the season.M.Crabtree,Dem.Thomas,D.Heyward-Bay, A.Brown,M.Manningham,M.Jenkins, E.Doucet,J.Simpson! Thanks!

Ok , I answered this one to you on twitter , but I wanted to give it some more thought and re-work the ranks I sent you.

1 Heyward-Bey OAK- He is the quintessential 3rd year WR. He was horrible his first two years and all of a sudden is running great routes , flashing top end speed , and is creating separation from the defense while showing strength with the ball in his hands. He get’s the #1 spot from this motley crue as long as Palmer cooperates.

2 Manningham NYG – He is still getting the targets , but not getting the TDs , I tried to warn everyone and anyone that would listen that he reached his ceiling last year and that he was being overdrafted this summer. That being said , he is under-performing right now and is due for some better games the rest of the season. Cruz is not going to over take him , as Eli still loves Mario and Coughlin is steady when it comes to keeping his players in their proper fantasy position. He is the anti-Shannahan.

3 Crabtree SF- With Josh Morgan out and Gore reclaiming his position amongst the running back elites , Crabby has a chance to be a decent WR3 the rest of the way. Alex Smith has improved , but let”s face it  , he had nowhere to go but up. Crabtree seems to be healthy and needs to shed the image as primadonna sissy who can’t play through pain; a few 7 catch weeks will help.

4 Dem. Thomas Den- Tebow really did look his way a lot last week and it ended with a score for Thomas. Demaryius is a talented WR who has been oft injured so far in his short career. Tebow seems to prefer Thomas to Decker so far and because of that , he gets the nod over the other weekly fill-ins to hold and improve his stock the rest of the way.

5 A. Brown Pit- My intial assessment had Brown at the bottom and I felt that was a clear mistake. After he blew up last week albeit against the Cards, it is time to give him a bit of love. Ward has regressed since his good game about 3 weeks ago and Brown is becoming an interesting play against horrible defenses like the Pats this week. He is young enough and strong enough to hold his value and improve it the rest of the way.

6 Doucet Ari- 6-8 is where these WRs decline. Doucet gets the nod over the other two because he has a more clear role with a better WR across from him that demands double and triple teams. Also after this week the Cardinals schedule lightens up and he should be a decent play going forward if you’re in a jam.

7 Simpson Cin- The guy comes equipped with great size , great speed and great amount of drugs. He gets the nod over Jenkins simply because there is a chance he could give someone a contact high that is guarding him man to man which could result in a long TD catch any week.

8 Jenkins Min- Ponder to Jenkins for a TD! Yea I can’t envision myself saying that many more times this year, can you?

VERDICT: None of these players are going to be WR1’s in fantasy football , but many of them may help you win a game during the season. Ranking these types of players are what sets apart the men from the boys in all of your fantasy leagues.

5 @catzfan4life writes: yo my dude @iconfantasyJoe gimme some help on this one: J. Starks and B. Tate are available, which one should I add to bench?

This one is a bit trickier than it seems. The untrained eye would snatch up Starks in a second saying “Oh Mah Gawd , dat Arian Foster guy is too good!” But lost in that shuffle last week was Tate busting the hell out of the defense as well. Starks has an even bigger threat in front of him than Foster and that’s Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers will continue to throw the ball all over the place and rightfully so. He will also steal TDs on the goal line a few more times this year. Grant is not really a factor right now in GB and yet Starks is still only getting 10-12 carries a week.

ALL THAT BEING SAID: The packers are undefeated – Rodgers will slow down because of that , and come the end of the season Starks will start to get an increased workload to save Rodgers and prep for the playoffs.

VERDICT: Even – with a shade toward  Tate for now because they both get 10-12 carries per week and Tate does more with his touches. If Foster goes down his value  sky-rockets and Stark’s value won’t dramatically increase like that until week 15 when the Packers clinch their playoffs birth.

My question to you @catzfan4life:  Can you get both of them? I have to believe there are 2 cuts worth of roster space on your team  for both of these young potential studs as they offer more value than most wr3’s and 4’s.

MNF Quick Thoughts- Week 3

Tony Romo (en) at a Dallas Cowboys (en) preseason.

Image via Wikipedia

What to look for in tonights game.

Let’s break down each teams key players and get some sleepers out there.

Was on the money last MNF calling Hixon a sleeper and he made a spectacular TD catch. Also called the Giants win and Eli stepping his game up.

Even gave you this nugget ” Mike Sims Walker is enough of a primadonna that he will bring his A game for a national tv audience” Sure enough MSW delivered which made me look REAL GOOD!

On to tonights game:

Dallas Cowboys:

Romo – will play and play fine , he showed last week that he has a high pain tolerance and he will need it as rib injuries are VERY painful – 275 yards 2 tds

Dez – Expected to play a monumental role on the Dallas passing game regardless of the injury. Was very aggressive about his treatment this week as he no doubt realizes on  a national stage with Austin out he could grab some league wide headlines with a great performance.

FEARLESS FORECAST: 7 112 1td

Witten – Looks great so far and Romo obviously has great chemistry , with Felix playing but being nicked up , Witten will be the safety valve he always has been. Not much in the passing game right now so something like  6 for 75 1 td  is where I see his stat line ending up.

Felix – I would avoid him , I have discussed a few times how I do NOT think he is a top end fantasy player and he proved that to me last week. He scored a td week 1 but that will be the abberration NOT the rule.

SLEEPER:

Ogletree – Everyone is all over this guy Holley. Why? Because he caught a long bomb in OT to help beat the niners? REALLY? That one catch is the reason Holley became a potential matchup play? NOT A CHANCE!Ogletree is actually a pretty good WR , and with Austin out , he is my pick to surprise this week as Romo and him have created some decent chemistry.

REDSKINS:

Rex – Love the matchup , he is stupid enough to honestly believe he is a better QB then Romo and maybe tonight he will perform that way. I think they need 300 and 3 tds from him in order to win this game , 250 and 2 more like it , but the upside and potential is there for a very nice game , start him confidently , he will score.

Hightower – Nice back so far , I think his value will decrease as the season goes along , Helu will start to vulture touches but is a good enough runner in this system that he will be worth a start each week regardless of matchup. The cowboys have been GREAT against the run in the first two weeks and will give Timmy some trouble , but he should produce low end rb2 numbers.

Helu – 15 touches a week seems probable , needs to be owned by EVERYONE that owns Hightower , if one back was going to burn the boys tonight it would be him. I love adding youth to my fantasy teams.

Moss – Burns the cowboys , should have a great game on a big stage , long underrated , but always producing.

Fred Davis -I have loved this guy FOREVER! Been pimping him in my rankings as a sleeper and someone to own well BEFORE he broke out in week 1. My readers know this. I will say Cooley is NOT fully done yet and will get healthier soon , but Davis is the TE to own there. 5 for 60 is where I see his stat line ending.

SLEEPER

Gaffney – Another underrated guy , his problem is the fact he has no substantial upside. But he is consistent enough and the Dallas secondary is bad enough that starting him is a safe bet for 4-6 catches and some low end flex points.

Everyone is picking the skins to win, I think Dallas wins this game:

Dallas 27  Skins 21

The Holy Grail- Week 3 WRs

Vincent Jackson, a player with the San Diego C...

Image via Wikipedia

Leading you to the promised land each week.

Very important week for the WRs . The position is shaping up so get your research swag going and win yourself a game this week!

MUST STARTS

1 AJ @NO – You don’t bench him , should be the number 1 PPR WR each week regardless of matchup

2 Calvin @Min- see Andre Johnson , then add 1A PPR WR each week

3 Vincent Jacksonvs KC – Gates out , Floyd hurt , Jackson , Mathews and Tolbert will all be busy in the passing game -KC stinks

4 Roddy White @Tb – Big week a coming… ohhhhhhhh a big week is a coming – one of these weeks anyway , maybe this one.

5 Mike Wallace @Ind – This guy is a flat out monster right now – must start each week , fast , slick , wirey..lots of adjectives and a whole lot of superlatives.

6 Larry Fitz @Sea – You’re welcome for last weeks call when some writers jumped ship , lower expectation in SEA though only because of the whole ebbs and flows thing , unguardable.

7 Britt  vs Den – This guy is legit , Hasselbeck has been a boom for his fantasy value , he is ONLY 22 years old. WOW

8 Steve Smith vs Jax – Makes me puke in my mouth , but I do feel good for the guy because  he really deserved an actual QB after almost a decade of that slop they were throwing out there. – Yes he became a must start already

MNF- Quick Thoughts Week 2

Capture of Eli Manning in a public service ann...

Looking Dumbfounded as Usual!

What to look for this week fantasy wise:

Giants:

Eli will be better , plain and simple

Gilbride will call more running plays , upping Bradshaws’s value in this game

Nicks is playing , and if he is playing I expect him to be close enough to full speed – Big Game

Manningham – much bigger game then last week – I Expect them to move it vs the Rams and use Play Action to set up Manningham.

Tuck – is in , but the Giants pass defense is still ravaged by injuries.

Sleeper : Hixon – He complained this week , and in life the Squeaky Wheel gets the grease.

Rams:

Sjax is out

Bradford will be better and the WRs will drop less balls

Caddy will not have as much running room this game as last week – but could be decent in the catch game

Kendricks to be involved much more – should up his stock this week

Gibson = the most average WR I’ve ever seen , average is good enough for 10 points in game that could be higher scoring

Mike Sims Walker – One of the most enigmatic WRs of all time , often times follows 0 pt games wtih 30 point games ,

I think he will surprise people tonight because he is PrimaDonnish enough to get his act together for the Nat Tv audience.

Sleeper: Salas – Filling in for Amendola at the slot , could get some decent work tonight if Tuck can help get a nice pass rush on Bradford.

Prediction: Giants 27 – Rams 24

The Holy Grail – Week 2 WRs

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgera...

Needs a Pro Bowl week to get back on track!

LEADING YOU TO THE PROMISED LAND THIS WEEK!

MUST STARTS

1 Andre Johnson vs Mia – After what he did last week and what Brady did to the MIA passing game last week , he belongs number 1 , especially with Mega nursing an ankle injury. Safe to say Miami’s passing defense was M. I. A. last week… keep reading , they get worse.

2 Calvin vs KC –  Great matchup , you are starting him , he is playing , he plays he most likely scores and always has a chance at an all time day.

3 Roddy White vs Phi – The matchup doesn’t scare me , he did not score last week , I think he scores this week and the Falcons will need to keep up with the Eagles , plus Ryan and the offense are always all systems go at home.

Larry Fitzgerald vs Wash – Nicks beat them pretty easily last week , Fitz should have no issues getting free and finding room , could be a sneaky high scoring game and he will give closer to what I expect out of him this year.

5 Greg Jennings vs Car – Another great matchup , Doucett burned them deep last week , Jennings is a lot better then Doucett , sometimes it is just that simple.

6 Mike Wallace vs Sea – Everyone scores in this game! Final score Pitt 84 Seahawks 2.

Miles Austin vs SF – Should do good here , Dez is banged up , Miles will be targetted heavily.

Vjax vs NE – Thanks for making me look like an idiot last week. Looking forward to what you have in store for me this week.

9  Marshall vs Hou – Great matchup , another potential shootout that could benefit Marshall’s volume work as he looked very good on MNF.

10 Djax vs ATL – Fast track , should be flying , next time don’t drop the long TD.

Out and Up: Week 2 Waivers

Chris Cooley was drafted in the third round of...

Cut the guy!

Tuesday is waiver days for most everyone in all fantasy football leagues. So every Tuesday I will release a new article detailing who I would throw out (cut) and who I would pick up (claim). None of this is set in stone , and every league and team should be treated differently. I am not saying to give up on all of these players , but what I am saying is if you needed to make room for another more promising and younger prospect , well it is safe to say goodbye to a player you may have loved previously. Do NOT make the mistake of holding on to an aging under performing player , there are ALWAYS early warning signs , read them and adjust. It could mean the difference between 6th place and a championship.

Out and Up : Week 2 waivers

QB

PICK UP

Henne– Looked real good , but the Pats looked bad again on defense. Keep your hopes realistic , but Henne just became a nice matchup play.

Newton – This is a testament to how bad the AZ defense is. Newton just had his best game of the season , but he does have a top WR that he has shown early connection with and that counts for something. There are a lot of QBs out there, but if you want to take a chance on Cam , I can not say it’s a bad move.

THROW OUT
